About Dr Kushner
dr_cliff_kushner
Dr Kushner matriculated at Oudtshoorn High School in 1970. He studied dentistry at the University of Stellenbosch where he qualified in mid-1976. After doing his national military service, he did locums and then settled in Port Elizabeth where he opened his own practice in the Western suburbs in 1979.
He built up a large practice and in Dec 2008 moved to 176 Main Rd Walmer to fullfil his ambition of establishing a private practise dedicated to his fields of interest. These are as follows:

Diagnosis and treatment planning: Just as an architect draws plans, a patient might need a plan to restore his teeth. This often requires a team approach involving dental specialists such as a prosthodontist (specialist in restorative dentistry), periodontist (gum specialist), orthodontist (specialist who straightens crooked teeth) or a maxillo-facial surgeon (specialist in oral surgery).

Prosthodontics: This involves amongst other procedures all types of fillings and crowns to natural teeth as well as dental implants. Dr Kushner has been restoring implants since 1989. He refers his patients to either a highly experienced periodontist or oral surgeon for the surgical implant placement. He then takes care of the restorative phase, which involves crowns, bridges or dentures, which are implant supported. Other aspects of prosthodontics include bleaching, veneers, root canal therapy and removable partial dentures.

Pedodontics: This is the field of children’s dentistry, which involves fillings, extractions and preventative procedures such as fissure sealants. Should children be highly anxious or require procedures such as multiple extraction of teeth, concious sedation is provided by an aenethetist specially trained in this field.

Periodontics:
Successful treatment begins with healthy gums. Gum problems are managed or refered to a specialist periodontist.

Academic Activities.
Dr Kushner regularly attends academic meetings, workshops and lectures throughout South Africa in his fields of interest, as well as many other aspects of modern dentistry, enabling him to diagnose and if necessary, refer to the correct speciality.
In August 2008, he participated in the ITI Education Week, held at the University of Berne in Switzerland, the topic being, Clinical Concepts in Implant Dentistry. He has lectured locally on the practical aspects of dental implant therapy.

Dr Kushner is a member of the following groups:
South African Dental Association
International Team for Implantology (ITI)
South African Society of Implantology
Cape Society of Impantology
South African Prosthodontic Society (General practitioner member)
